Cloudflare for Shopware

Cloudflare for Shopware — WAF, Store API and checkout protection

Self-hosted and composable Shopware stores control their own origin, so they benefit from a real edge layer. An independent specialist configures Cloudflare WAF, DDoS and bot protection, Store API hardening and a cache strategy that complements the Shopware HTTP cache — without ever breaking cart or checkout.

Who this is for

  • Self-hosted & composable Shopware 6 stores
  • Headless / Store API storefronts
  • High-value, high-traffic e-commerce
  • Teams preparing for drops, launches or Black Friday

Capabilities

What Cloudflare covers for a Shopware store

A complete edge layer for self-hosted Shopware — security, performance and abuse control — configured by one specialist around your real flows.

WAF for admin, checkout & Store API

Managed OWASP rules plus custom rules tuned for Shopware paths — the admin, login, checkout and the Store API — rolled out log, then challenge, then block.

Shopware admin protection

Lock down the /admin back office, blunt brute-force and credential stuffing, and put rate limiting or Zero Trust in front of staff access without slowing them down.

Store API & headless protection

Rate limiting and bot scoring on the Store API and sales-channel endpoints so composable and headless storefronts cannot be scraped or overloaded.

Bot & scraping defence

Help cut price and catalogue scraping, fake-account creation and spam orders with SEO-safe bot management that keeps Google and real customers flowing.

DDoS & peak-traffic readiness

Layer 3/4 and Layer 7 protection, Under Attack playbooks and origin lockdown prepared in advance so launches, drops and Black Friday stay online.

Cache that respects Shopware

Edge cache rules that complement the Shopware HTTP cache for catalogue pages while always bypassing cart, checkout, customer account and session content.

Problems we solve

The Shopware issues that bring stores to Cloudflare

Exposed Shopware origin

Attackers reach your origin IP directly and bypass Cloudflare. We lock the origin to Cloudflare and harden DNS so the edge stays unavoidable.

Admin under brute-force

The Shopware admin and customer login are hammered by stuffing and password spraying. We add rate limiting, challenges and optional Zero Trust access.

Store API abuse and scraping

Headless storefronts and integrations call the Store API heavily, and the same endpoints get scraped or overloaded. We add API rate limits and bot scoring.

Cart and checkout served from cache

Customer-specific pages cached at the edge cause wrong totals and broken sessions. We enforce strict bypass for cart, checkout and account.

Store down during peak sales

A traffic spike or DDoS crushes the origin during a launch or drop. We prepare Under Attack playbooks and rate-limit thresholds ahead of time.

Plugin and cache rules conflict

An aggressive edge rule breaks an extension, a sales channel or the HTTP cache. We map your plugins and verify rules against real store flows.

Store API protection

How do you protect the Shopware Store API without blocking headless storefronts?

Composable and headless Shopware stores rely on the Store API and sales-channel endpoints for the whole shopping experience — catalogue, cart and checkout calls all flow through them. The same endpoints can be abused: scrapers copy catalogues and pricing, and automated clients can overload resolvers.

We profile how your storefront and integrations actually call the API, allowlist known clients, then apply rate limiting, WAF rules and bot scoring tuned to that traffic — rolled out in stages so genuine storefront, app and partner calls are not caught.

See WAF setup details

On your Store API endpoints

  • Rate limiting tuned to real Store API usage
  • WAF rules on Store API & sales-channel paths
  • Bot scoring to separate storefronts from scrapers
  • Allowlists for known headless and partner clients

Cache strategy

Caching without breaking cart or checkout

Shopware already runs an HTTP cache at the origin, often behind a reverse proxy. Cloudflare sits in front and complements it — it does not replace it. The edge can cache static assets and safe catalogue responses to cut latency and help shield the origin during traffic spikes.

The non-negotiable rule: cart, checkout, customer account and any session-specific content bypass the edge cache, so that — when configured correctly — totals, stock and logged-in state stay correct. We also keep cache rules safe around installed plugins and extensions.

How the cache layers fit

  • Edge cache for static assets & safe catalogue pages
  • Bypass cart, checkout & customer-account paths
  • Respect the Shopware HTTP cache at the origin
  • Plugin-aware rules verified against real sessions

Compatibility

Plugin and extension compatibility, done safely

Shopware stores run on extensions and sales channels. We map them before we tighten rules, so protection goes up without breaking what your store depends on.

How we keep plugins working

  • Inventory installed plugins, themes and sales channels first
  • Map the AJAX, webhook and API paths each one uses
  • Allowlist payment, shipping and ERP integrations
  • Stage every rule log → challenge → block with monitoring

Origin protection for self-hosted Shopware

  • Lock the origin firewall to Cloudflare IP ranges
  • Harden DNS so the real origin IP is not exposed
  • Authenticated origin pulls where supported
  • Separate rules for admin, storefront and API hosts

Scope

What is and isn’t included

Clear boundaries from the start, so expectations are honest.

What is included

  • Cloudflare audit and configuration review for Shopware
  • WAF + rate limiting on admin, checkout & Store API
  • DDoS readiness and origin IP hardening
  • Bot, scraping and spam-order defence (SEO-safe)
  • Cache rules that bypass cart, checkout and account
  • DNS, SSL/TLS and Zero Trust access for the admin

What is not included

  • Shopware core or plugin development
  • Server, PHP, MySQL or hosting administration
  • Shopware security updates and version upgrades
  • Anti-fraud / chargeback platform setup
  • PCI certification, backups and disaster recovery

When you need this

  • Your Shopware admin or login is under brute-force pressure
  • The Store API is being scraped or abused
  • Catalogue and pricing are being copied by competitors
  • Checkout or stock broke after a Cloudflare change
  • You’re preparing for a launch, drop or Black Friday
  • You want one accountable owner for the edge layer

When Cloudflare is not enough

Cloudflare is one strong layer at the edge. For Shopware it does not replace:

  • Secure development, code review and timely patching of your application and plugins.
  • Backups, disaster recovery and a tested restore process.
  • A dedicated anti-fraud, chargeback or payment-risk platform.
  • Hosting, database administration and origin server maintenance.
  • Full incident response and forensics for large or regulated enterprises.

What Cloudflare can and cannot do

Cloudflare reduces risk, blocks a large share of malicious traffic, hardens critical endpoints and improves performance. No edge platform can make a website completely or permanently secure, and Cloudflare does not, on its own, stop payment fraud or replace secure development, patching, backups, anti-fraud platforms or proper hosting. We configure Cloudflare as one strong layer in a complete security posture.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cloudflare good for self-hosted Shopware stores?
Yes. Self-hosted and composable Shopware stores control their own origin, which makes them a good fit for Cloudflare as an edge layer: WAF, DDoS protection, bot management, rate limiting and origin hardening across the admin, checkout and Store API. It complements the Shopware HTTP cache rather than replacing it, and is configured so cart, checkout and customer content are never cached at the edge.
How does Cloudflare cache work with the Shopware HTTP cache?
Cloudflare sits in front of your existing caching. We let the edge cache static assets and safe catalogue responses while the Shopware HTTP cache (and any reverse proxy you run) keeps doing its job at the origin. The critical rule is that cart, checkout, customer account and any session-specific content bypass the edge cache, so that — when configured correctly — totals, stock and logged-in state stay correct.
Can Cloudflare protect the Shopware Store API for headless storefronts?
Yes. Composable and headless Shopware setups lean heavily on the Store API and sales-channel endpoints, which can be scraped or overloaded if left open. We apply WAF rules, rate limiting and bot scoring tuned to your real API traffic, allowlist known integrations, and challenge suspicious clients while leaving legitimate storefront and partner calls untouched.
Will a Shopware WAF block legitimate customers, admins or plugins?
Not when it is tuned properly. We roll out WAF and rate-limiting rules in stages — log first, then challenge, then block — and watch analytics so genuine shoppers, admins, extensions and integrations are not caught. Shopware has many AJAX, sales-channel and API patterns, so rules are built around your real flows and installed plugins rather than a generic template.
Does Cloudflare replace Shopware patching, hosting and backups?
No. Cloudflare is one strong layer at the edge that helps reduce malicious traffic and harden critical endpoints. It does not replace secure development, Shopware and plugin updates, server and database administration, backups, anti-fraud tooling or full incident response. We configure Cloudflare alongside those, not instead of them.
Are you an official Cloudflare or Shopware partner?
We are an independent consultancy focused on Cloudflare for e-commerce. We are not an official Cloudflare or Shopware partner unless explicitly stated, which keeps our advice vendor-neutral and in your interest. We configure Cloudflare as one strong layer alongside your Shopware hosting, patching, backups and any anti-fraud platform.
