Cloudflare WAF Setup

Cloudflare WAF setup that blocks attacks — not your customers

Managed rules, OWASP protection and custom firewall rules for e-commerce, SaaS, APIs and high-traffic sites. We protect checkout, login, admin and API endpoints and deploy every rule in stages — log, then challenge, then block — so real buyers, payment callbacks and Googlebot are never caught in the net.

Who this is for

  • E-commerce stores protecting checkout & accounts
  • SaaS products and public-facing APIs
  • High-traffic sites under bot or attack pressure
  • Teams whose WAF is blocking real customers

Endpoint protection

What we protect with the WAF

The WAF is most valuable where it guards your revenue and your data. We focus rules on the endpoints that matter most.

Checkout protection

Rules and rate limiting that shield the cart and checkout from abuse, carding and bots — while never caching dynamic checkout pages or blocking real buyers.

Login protection

Defend sign-in and account pages against credential stuffing and brute force with rate limiting, challenges and Turnstile, without frustrating genuine customers.

Admin panel protection

Lock down wp-admin, /admin and back-office paths by limiting access, challenging unknown sources and pairing the WAF with Zero Trust where it fits.

API endpoint protection

Protect REST, GraphQL and webhook endpoints with method, header and rate rules — keeping partner integrations and server-to-server calls allow-listed.

OWASP & managed rules

Enable Cloudflare's managed rulesets and the OWASP Core Ruleset against SQL injection, XSS and common exploits, tuned to your stack to avoid false positives.

Custom firewall rules

Application-specific rules by country, ASN, user agent, path or request rate — written for your real traffic patterns, not a generic template.

Managed vs custom

Managed rules and custom rules, working together

A strong Cloudflare WAF configuration combines Cloudflare's maintained protection with rules written for your specific application.

Managed rules & OWASP

Cloudflare's managed rulesets and the OWASP Core Ruleset defend against common, known attack patterns — SQL injection, cross-site scripting, remote code execution and other exploits — and are kept up to date by Cloudflare. The work is in tuning sensitivity and paranoia level so they protect you without flagging legitimate requests.

  • Cloudflare Managed Ruleset enabled & scoped
  • OWASP Core Ruleset with tuned sensitivity
  • Per-rule exclusions for known-good paths
  • Coverage for SQLi, XSS and common exploits

Custom firewall rules

Custom rules are where the setup gets specific to your business. We write firewall rules and rate limits for your real traffic — by country, ASN, user agent, header, path or request rate — to protect checkout, login, admin and APIs against the abuse you actually face, not a generic threat list.

  • Path-based rules for /checkout, /admin, /api
  • Rate limiting on login and sensitive endpoints
  • Country, ASN and user-agent expressions
  • Allow-lists for payment webhooks & partners

Our approach

How do you deploy WAF rules without breaking the site?

The single biggest cause of WAF disasters is switching rules straight to block on live traffic. We never do that. Every rule goes through a staged rollout: we watch what it would catch in log mode, review real firewall events against your checkout, payment callbacks, APIs and verified crawlers, move to a challenge, and only then block confirmed-malicious traffic. It is slower by design — and it is why customers and search engines keep getting through.

The staged rollout

  • Log first — zero impact on real traffic
  • Review events against real business flows
  • Challenge borderline traffic, not block it
  • Block only confirmed-malicious requests
  1. 1

    1. Log

We deploy each new rule in log-only mode so it records what it would catch without affecting anyone. Real traffic flows untouched while we gather evidence.

  2. 2

    2. Review

We analyse firewall events against real business flows — checkout, payment webhooks, APIs, login and verified crawlers — separating genuine attacks from false positives.

  3. 3

    3. Challenge

Once tuned, suspicious traffic gets a managed challenge or Turnstile rather than an outright block, giving borderline-but-legitimate users a way through.

  4. 4

    4. Block

Only after the rule proves accurate do we switch confirmed-malicious traffic to block — then keep monitoring analytics so nothing legitimate is caught later.

Problems we solve

What can go wrong if the WAF is configured badly

A misconfigured firewall can cost you more than the attacks it is meant to stop. These are the failures we see — and prevent.

Blocked checkout and lost sales

Over-aggressive rules challenge or block paying customers at the worst moment. We tune the WAF so revenue paths stay open.

Broken payment callbacks & APIs

A bad rule silently blocks payment webhooks or partner API calls, so orders fail or hang. We map and allow-list every integration first.

Blocked Googlebot and SEO damage

A broad rule accidentally challenges verified crawlers and indexing suffers. We verify and allow-list search engines before any block.

Default rules, no real protection

WAF is 'on' but never tuned, so attacks slip through while customers get challenged. We configure it for your actual application.

Endless false positives

Constant noise and support tickets from legitimate users tripping rules. We isolate the triggering rule and add precise exceptions.

No one owns the firewall rules

Rules drift, exceptions pile up and nobody is accountable. Managed care gives you a specialist who keeps the WAF healthy.

False-positive tuning

Keeping the WAF accurate over time

A WAF is never 'set and forget'. Traffic changes, attackers adapt and new integrations appear — so rules need ongoing tuning.

How we reduce false positives

  • Trace each block back to the exact triggering rule
  • Separate genuine attacks from blocked customers
  • Add precise exceptions instead of disabling rules
  • Tune OWASP sensitivity and paranoia level
  • Allow-list verified search engines and partners
  • Watch analytics during and after every change

When you need a WAF setup or review

  • Customers report being blocked or challenged at checkout
  • Payment webhooks or API calls started failing
  • You enabled OWASP rules and traffic broke
  • You're launching, dropping stock or prepping Black Friday
  • Your WAF is on but has never actually been tuned
  • You want one owner accountable for the firewall

Scope

What is included and what is not included

Clear boundaries from the start, so expectations stay honest.

What is included

  • Managed ruleset and OWASP Core configuration & tuning
  • Custom firewall rules for checkout, login, admin & APIs
  • Rate limiting on sensitive and high-risk endpoints
  • Staged log → challenge → block rollout
  • False-positive review and precise exceptions
  • Allow-listing of payment webhooks, partners & crawlers

What is not included

  • Application code fixes or vulnerability patching
  • Server, hosting or database administration
  • Anti-fraud / chargeback or payment-risk platforms
  • PCI or compliance certification
  • Backups, disaster recovery and full incident forensics

When you need this

  • You're behind Cloudflare but the WAF was never properly set up
  • Bad rules are blocking checkout, callbacks or APIs
  • You face credential stuffing, carding or scraping
  • You're scaling traffic and need rules that hold up
  • You want a firewall tuned to your platform, not a template

When Cloudflare is not enough

The WAF is one strong layer at the edge. It does not replace:

  • Secure development, code review and timely patching of your application and plugins.
  • Backups, disaster recovery and a tested restore process.
  • A dedicated anti-fraud, chargeback or payment-risk platform.
  • Hosting, database administration and origin server maintenance.
  • Full incident response and forensics for large or regulated enterprises.

What Cloudflare can and cannot do

Cloudflare reduces risk, blocks a large share of malicious traffic, hardens critical endpoints and improves performance. No edge platform can make a website completely or permanently secure, and Cloudflare does not, on its own, stop payment fraud or replace secure development, patching, backups, anti-fraud platforms or proper hosting. We configure Cloudflare as one strong layer in a complete security posture.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Cloudflare WAF setup?
A Cloudflare WAF setup is the configuration of Cloudflare's Web Application Firewall to protect your site: enabling and tuning managed rulesets (including OWASP Core), writing custom firewall rules, adding rate limiting, and protecting critical endpoints like checkout, login, admin and APIs. A good setup is staged and tuned so it blocks malicious traffic without blocking real customers, payment callbacks or search engines.
Will the WAF block my real customers or break checkout?
It can if it is deployed badly, which is exactly why we use a staged rollout. We first run new rules in log mode, watch real traffic, then move to challenge, and only switch to block once we have confirmed legitimate checkout, payment webhooks, APIs and crawlers are not caught. We also exclude trusted paths and tune the OWASP sensitivity to keep false positives low.
What is the difference between managed rules and custom rules?
Managed rules are Cloudflare's maintained rulesets (including the OWASP Core Ruleset) that defend against common, known attack patterns such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting. Custom rules are firewall rules we write specifically for your application — for example protecting /checkout, /wp-login.php, /admin or a particular API path by country, ASN, user agent, header or rate. A strong setup combines both.
Can a Cloudflare WAF protect my API endpoints?
Yes. We protect API endpoints with custom rules, schema and method restrictions where appropriate, rate limiting per token or IP, and bot signals — while keeping legitimate server-to-server calls and webhooks working. For complex APIs we map every consumer first so automated clients and partner integrations are allow-listed before any blocking is enabled.
Will Cloudflare WAF rules hurt my SEO or block Googlebot?
Not when configured carefully. A common mistake is a broad rule that accidentally challenges or blocks Googlebot, Bingbot or other verified crawlers, which can harm indexing. We verify search-engine bots, allow-list them ahead of any block action, and monitor analytics during rollout so SEO crawlers are never caught in the net.
Do I need Cloudflare Pro, Business or Enterprise for this?
Managed rules, custom firewall rules and basic rate limiting are available on paid plans, with more granular control on Business and Enterprise. We work with your current plan, explain honestly where a limitation is plan-related rather than configuration-related, and only recommend an upgrade when it genuinely changes what we can protect.
Can you fix a WAF that is already blocking legitimate traffic?
Yes — false-positive tuning is one of our most common engagements. We review your firewall events, identify which rule is triggering, separate genuine attacks from blocked customers, and add precise exceptions or adjust sensitivity so the rule keeps protecting you without the collateral damage.
